Churston Builders – The Torbay and South Hams Builder. Back Garden Update, Paignton
Churston Builders carried out this fantastic back garden update in Paignton during the Summer of 2020.
Torbay is well known for its abundance of hills and this has lead to many properties with steep and virtually unusable back gardens. However there is a solution. Borrowing the terracing process, more often seen in mountainous regions of tropical countries to maximise agricultural production. We dug into the steep bank at the rear of this Paignton house and created 3 steep terraces. The ground was rocky and solid so we were able to create retaining walls with sleeper style garden timbers. The highest tier was backfilled with topsoil so it could be planted with Torbay palms and a striking Mock Castor Oil tree. The next tier down was filled and topped with decorative gravel for more ornate planting. Just these two small terraces have allowed the owners the additional space to enjoy planting their garden where previously they had little opportunity.
The third and lowest tier of the terrace was much wider and allowed space for a contemporary composite deck area. Composite decking was chosen for its longevity and all year round use opportunities as it doesn’t absorb water like traditional timber decking. Its also low maintenance so just the occasional sweep up is required meaning more time for relaxing! The drop to garden level was protected by a timber balustrade with stylish stainless steel ropes to finish it.
The existing level garden was then finished to match the new terraces with more decking and an area of artificial lawn to complete the low maintenance, year-round useable back garden.
