Churston Builders – The Torbay and South Hams Builder. Verandah, Steps and decorative stonework, Totnes.
Churston Builders, the Torbay and South Hams Builder, were employed to provide the finishing touches to a new build in Totnes. The property required verandah and patio work around the ground floor to bring the access level up to uniform height around the main structure. As the build was on sloping ground a variety of paving techniques were used.
Foundations were dug and concrete poured so a basic blockwork wall structure could go up as a base at the front of the building. A beam and block floor was created with pre-cast concrete beams to provide the most stable possible base for the project. Churston Builders were careful to ensure the integrity of the underfloor ventilation for the house structure, to do this extension sleeves were used to connect the underfloor space of the house to ventilation bricks in the new stone walling. With the completed structure in place the walls were finished with a second skin of cotswold decorative walling. The surface was then finished with traditional, subtle textured flagstones.
To the rear of the building where the ground level was higher further flagstones were laid on a poured concrete foundation surrounded by low decorative retaining walling which was finished with matching coping and caps.
