Churston Builders – The Torbay Builder, completed this dual storey bungalow extension to a property in Shorton Valley, Paignton in 2014.
This bungalow extension project involved getting the maximum space possible from a bungalow plot with a steeply sloping rear garden.
To create the space for the kitchen extension a large amount of soil had to be cleared first of all and then a retaining wall built to stabilise the remaining rear garden. Foundations for the wall and the kitchen extension were dug to the same depth.
The kitchen extension was built with a timber frame, insulated with Rockwool and 25mm thermal board. The exterior was mesh-clad then rendered. Internally the insulation board was then plastered to finish.
Phase two involved the extension of the original roofline with architectural steel to take the roof weight as the rear of the property would form a large area of full height extension. The roof weight would be fully born by the new steel rather than full-span joists.
The framework for the extension was again completed with timber frame, insulation and final rendering. The interior featured full height accommodation at the rear and reduced height rooms at the front with Velux windows.
The entire roof was re-felted, battened and finished with new Marley clay tiles.
